About the New Playground The playground is dedicated to the memory of Kindergarten teacher Seth Olson. He wanted a playground that is safe, age- and developmentally appropriate for Dickson and community children. The playground will meet applicable ADA accessibility requirements so that the playground is available to as many children as possible. The theme of the playground is transformation, symbolic of a life journey through elementary school. Transformation on the playground will be experienced as the lifecycle of the cecropia moth, Our playground theme offers an educational component and allows for connections to nature by incorporating appropriate shade/food trees along with creative equipment. We will use this magical concept to create a stimulating playground by building custom caterpillar tunnel, cocoon cargo net climber, and overhead moth sunscreen structures into the playground. The playground will be constructed in three phases:
In general, our plans expand the playground equipment area and spread existing, re-usable equipment to the perimeter of new edging. These actions create a large open center (Kid Choice) area for placement of a circular shaped modular play structure. That structure allows for free circulation of foot traffic around it. A child will experience the moth circle of life by exiting the embankment slide, continuing around to the two arches, circular climber, caterpillar climbing structure, embankment cocoon cargo net, and then returning to the beginning point down the embankment slide. A large grassy play area will be constructed adjacent to the equipment play area. This area will have a rubber surfaced perimeter exercise track that serves as the ADA entrance to both the grassy and equipment play areas. The equipment play area will be covered with ADA compliant loose rubber mulch. The fenced embankment top is rubber safety coated and allows ADA access to the tops of the embankment play equipment. Overhead moth sun screens shade a safety coated outdoor classroom with stadium seating and steps. Donate Now to help us complete this magical journey. Lifecycle of the cecropia moth The cecropia moth is the largest and one of the most beautiful moths in North America. It is a nocturnal creature, therefore most people are unaware of its existence or its unusual anatomical feature--it has no digestive system since it does not eat. Our K-2 playground will incorporate the cecropia life cycle into our design by incorporating custom caterpillar tunnel, cocoon cargo net climber, and overhead moth sunscreen structures into the playground.
